Before You Start: What You'll Need
- Large cardboard boxes or bins (labelled: Keep / Donate / Trash / Sell)
- Trash bags — lots of them
- A helper if possible
- A rented dumpster or a scheduled junk removal pickup for haul-away day
- Two days — one for sorting, one for hauling and organizing
Day 1: The Big Sort
Step 1 — Empty Everything Out
Pull everything out of the garage and into the driveway. Yes, everything. This is the most important step — you can't properly decide what to keep if you're working around things. It also forces you to see just how much you've accumulated.
Step 2 — The Four-Pile System
As you pull items out, immediately place each one into one of four categories:
- Keep — used in the last year and will use again
- Donate — good condition but no longer needed
- Sell — worth listing on Facebook Marketplace or having a garage sale
- Trash/Haul — broken, expired, or not worth keeping or donating
Be honest. The most common mistake is keeping things "just in case." If it's been sitting in your garage for three years untouched, it's probably not coming back into regular use.
Step 3 — Handle the Hazardous Stuff
Old paint, chemicals, batteries, and fluorescent bulbs can't go in the regular trash. Chicago has hazardous waste drop-off locations — check the City of Chicago website for current drop-off dates and locations. Set these items aside separately so they don't get mixed into your haul pile.
Day 2: Haul Away & Organize
Step 4 — Get the Haul Pile Gone
This is where most garage cleanout projects stall. If the trash pile is large, call a junk removal service to pick it up the same day — otherwise it tends to sit on the driveway and slowly migrate back into the garage. Garage Cleanout Guys offers same-day pickup in Chicago and suburbs.
Step 5 — Drop Off Donations
Load your donation boxes directly into the car and drop them off at a local thrift store or charity. Same-day is best — the donation pile has a tendency to end up back in the garage if left overnight.
Step 6 — Put the Keepers Back Strategically
Before moving things back in, think in zones:
- Frequently used items go at eye level and near the door
- Seasonal items (holiday decor, summer gear) go on high shelves
- Lawn and garden tools hang on the wall near the garage door
- Car supplies stay nearest to where you park
When to Call in the Pros
Some garages are beyond the one-weekend DIY approach — especially if there's been significant accumulation over many years, large furniture or appliances, or you're dealing with a property after a loss. In those cases, a professional garage cleanout crew can have a two or three-car garage completely cleared in a single day.
